You perfectly put down the thoughts and feelings I’ve struggled to articulate about the Western media and the kinds of narrative they push without considering the nuances of the issue!! Like you, I’m an Indo studying in the US and it bothers me anytime when someone pushes a Western narrative when giving their two cents to issues in countries like Indonesia. I was never able to articulate how I felt but the kinds of feeling I had was “ugh they DON’T get it” or “that’s not really a great way to think about it”. So THANK YOU for giving me the vocabularies I’ve struggled to find to describe my thoughts. Alright, on my way to do some more research on this topic now and good luck on your finals!! (I just completed a big one yesterday, 1 paper left to write!!)

LITERALLY FIGHTING WITH PEOPLE OVER TIKTKK AND GIVING THEM THIS ARTICLE and they still don’t understand. I swear they only care if it’s about s*x and Bali 🥱 (i’m balinese btw :D)

i don't think non-Indonesians (and many Western-raised Indonesians, tbh) fully understand that, crucially, hyper-focusing on the issue of sex makes it harder for the many negative aspects of the bill (including this one!) to be overturned.
this passage is obviously bad, it's just that if one can't understand how Indonesian authorities will react to the criticism... then maybe they're not criticizing effectively. and who pays the price of that?

we're already seeing Indonesian authority figures act defensively over the criticism drawn by this passage of the bill (https://politik.rmol.id/read/2022/12/08/556398/dubes-as-komentari-pasal-perzinahan-anwar-abbas-sangat-tendensius-dan-bernada-mengancam), and it's worrying.
